Grounds & Gardens

The Dower House is set in 5½ acres of established landscaped gardens, including lawns, shrubs and water features, all of which attract a variety of wildlife.

Mrs Judith Lywood, the owner of The Dower House, takes a personal interest in the grounds and gardens. We are proud of our unusual collection of trees and plants, wildlife pond and bog garden. The gardens are a constant source of interest and pleasure to our residents, many of them having been keen gardeners themselves.

Our wide riven stone path circulates through the main part of the grounds. The path enables most residents to take the opportunity of viewing the many trees, plants, shrubs and bulbs. It is accessible in all weathers, and is ideal for those using zimmer frames and wheelchairs. When the weather permits, the nursing staff enjoy takeing residents around the grounds in their wheelchairs.

Our physiotherapist makes use of the path when assisting residents with exercise. Many find it more pleasurable to take exercise whilst enjoying the gardens.

A courtyard garden with a fountain can be accessed from the drawing room and all bedrooms have views of the garden - many with private patios.

One of the highlights of the year is the visit of Miller's Ark Animal Farm who bring with them goats, sheep, dogs, cats, geese, ducks, guinea pigs, rabbits and other friendly animals to meet the residents' and their families.
